The quantity of matter contained in a definite bulk of a body is the density of the body. Example. The specific gravity of brimstone is 2, by which is meant that Weight of any bulk of brimstone Weight of same bulk of water--The density of brimstone is two grammes per cubic centimetre; 2000 ounces per cubic foot; two kilogrammes per cubic decimeter, &c.; whichever way we like to express it. Similarly with specific heat. When we say that the specific heat of a body is 0-5, we mean Quantity of heat required to heat the body 1C. Quautity of heat required to heat same weight of water 1 O.--" Thermal capacity is analagous to density, and refers to quantity of heat to raise a mass of the body 1 C. Thus thermal capacity of a body is 0-5 calories per cubic centimetre; 2 calories per 4 cubic centimetres, &c. The definition of specific heat on p. 84 it will be seen from the above statement is more correctly a definition of thermal capacity. In many text books no distinction is made between specific heat and thermal capacity. The student ought now, however, to understand in what the difference consists. H.
