The paper also illustrated the desirability of having access not only to records of old borings, but also to actual specimens obtained from the boreholes. The space at the Jermyn Street museum was limited, but he had the authority of the Director-General for saying that the Geological Survey would be glad to render any assistance in its power in storing cores obtained from important borings for future reference. It might perhaps be more convenient to have them stored locally, but it was of the utmost importance that they should be stored, whenever possible, in some public institution. Subsequent information often enabled geologists to interpret stored specimens which appeared to be useless at the time they were obtained. He imagined that important developments of this great coal-field, which was second only to that of South Wales, would take place iu the near future. Small faults in the overlying rocks often corresponded to important faults in the underlying Coal-measures, smd in the north of France slight rolls corresponded in the most extraordinary manner with important anticlines and synclines, so that there was every reason to believe that a detailed survey of the overlying rocks would throw important light on the structure and distribution of the concealed portion of the coal-field. In view of future developments, he would very much like to see the results of a careful re-survey of the overlying Triassic rocks.
