About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1834 Excerpt: ...they would indicate that the then-existing seas had been of a tropical character, and that at the period when these enormous ammonites and other testaceous cephalopods. were thrown down the seas of European latitudes, had a temperature even exceeding that of the hottest regions of the present ocean. Now although these ammo? nites are the most abundant and the best known of fossil animals, although more than four hundred species arc described by naturalists, and more than a hundred of these are met with in our own strata, although they occur in such abundance in a fossil state that whole strata of rock are composed of their shells, not one is nowT known to exist on the face of the earth. They retain their nacreous lustre in the oldest limestone rocks, and the beautiful lustre of the C'aryiithian marble is produced by the nacre of these shells. You observe the tcaphite has its two extremities bent up like the ends of a canoe, with the last enlarged turn detached from the rest, while the hamite has its extremities suddenly curved like a shepherd's staff or a hook, but has the same lobed chambers and external marginal siphon which you see jn the ammonite. The baculite (12) presents the same internal structure, but its form is long, straight, and conical, and with a large upper chamber for containing the budy of the cephalopod. In this fossil nautilus, or nautilite, as the fossil species are called, which I took from a chalk cliff at Rouen, in France, you perceive the same i smooth concave partitions with the siphon in their middle, and still preserving their nacreous lustre, as in the recent species. The structure of the orthoceratite (G) is like that of...
