Not illustrated. 1899 Excerpt: ...The more economically the steam could be used the less would be the consumption, and the smaller the consumption the larger the radius of action, and the less weight would have to be put on at high speeds. Therefore the consumption assumed an importance which perhaps had not quite been realized in England. It had been realized, it was true, to a certain extent in the mercantile marine, where the old Scotch boiler was used, and where the conditions were completely different to the Navy; but some of the results which had been obtained were very extraordinary. With regard to the circulation, he did not quite agree with Mr. Milton. In referring to the D'Allest boiler, Mr. Milton had brought forward a very important point indeed. Many boilers were at fault in not allowing sufficient room for the combustion, and in economical boilers it would be nearly always noticed that they had large combustion-chambers, or a large volume for combustion. He thought the most recent D'Allest boiler had tubes placed down Mr. Robertson. the side. The two tubes at the top, Figs. 9, Plate 7, had given considerable difficulty. The mixture contained in those tubes was largely steam and water, and considerable trouble had been found with them. Those two tubes had formed a matter of considerable importance in the D'Allest boiler in the French Navy, and had given rise to some trouble. The first D'Allest boilers were made without any combustion-chamber, and that was where the old Scotch boiler had a great advantage over the tubular boilers, for the reason that they had a good furnace and a good combustion-chamber, and the gases were thoroughly well mixed. The D'Allest boiler began without a combustion-chamber, and the addition of a combustion-chamber raised the evaporation per pound of co...
