It is a very simple operation to connect the voltmeter ACROSS THE COIL IN MULTIPLE and to connect the ammeter in ONE SIDE OF THE LINE IN SERIES and obtain the voltage E and current readings. Then from the formula R =--, the re C sistance of the coil can be computed. However, it is frequently necessary to determine the resistance of a certain number of feet of wire through which no current is flowing. To accompish this it is necessary to make use of a new formula which, stated in words, is as follows: The resistance in ohms is equal to the length of the conductor in feet multiplied by a constant and divided by the area of cross section of the conductor in circular mils. This formula may be expressed as follows: length in feet X constant Resistance in ohms =. The conCircular mils stant in the above formula is the resistance of a mil foot of the metal; hence, for copper it is 10%o, as given in a previous lesson. Thus, for COPPER the formula may be written: L X lOfto R =. Where R stands for resistance in ohms, CM L for the length of the conductor in feet and C M for circular mils. For example, suppose we wished to determine the resistance of 605 feet of number 12 copper signal wire. By referring to the table on page 60 we find that number 12 wire has 6,530 circula...
