MERTON COLLEGE. This College was first founded at Maiden, in Surrey, in 1264, and removed to Oxford in 1274, by Walter de Merton, Bishop of Rochester, and Lord High Chancellor of England. John Willyott, D. D. Chancellor of Exeter, gave Exhibitions in 1380, for the maintenance of twelve Portionistce, called Post-masters, who were afterwards increased to fourteen by John Chamber, Fellow of Eton, and Canon of Windsor, who directed that his two additional Exhibitioners should be elected from Eton College. In 1753, Henry Jackson, some time M.A. of this College, and afterwards Minor Canon of St. Paul's, founded four Scholarships. The Foundation consists of a Warden, twenty-four Fellows, fourteen Post-masters, four Scholars, two Chaplains, and two Clerks. The natives of the following dioceses are not eligible to Fellowships; viz. St. Asaph, Bangor, St. David's, LlandafF, Hereford, Chichester, Exeter, Rochester, Litchfield and Coventry, Chester, and Carlisle. Visitor. The Archbishop Of Canterbury. Warden. Peter Vaughan, D.
