Livy gives the following account of its surrender: --while Camillus was besieging it, a schoolmaster, under pretence of exercising his pupils, who were the children of the principal inhabitants, took them outside the gates, and gradually drew them off to the Roman camp. He then addressed Camillus, and told him that the place was nowcertainly in his power, as the parents of the boys would readily suffer anything rather than lose them. Indignant at such base treachery, Camillus ordered themantobe stripped naked, and, supplying the boys with rods, bade them whip him back into the city.
