About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1836 Excerpt: ...the sons of Jehoiada; but it is, I presume, evident from the context, that we ought to read there p son for "'J3 sons, as the Vulgate, and the principal editions of the LXX., except the Complutensian, do. Indeed, those, who wish not to make any alteration in the text, suppose, that sons is here put indefinitely for p son. See Poole's Synopsis. Two Hebrew MSS. omit the word 3 in this place. One Heb. MS. for PTHDT Zechariah, as in the text, reads HT"DT Zechariahu. In the Roman and Aldine editions, and the Alexandrian, and some other MSS. of the LXX., the son of Jehoiada is called Agapia?. St. Jerom on Matth. xxiii. 34, 35, and others, suppose Zachariah above mentioned, to be the same with Zacharias the son of Barachias, recorded there to have been slain between the porch and the altar. (6a) Sons. See the preceding Note. (66) Amaziah. In most of the Hebrew copies of the Bible, printed, as well as MS., where this name occurs, it is expressed liTlflCN Amaziahu. (6c) Jecholiah. This name is written in ii. Kings xv. 2, liTD' Jecholiahu, and in ii. Chron. xxvi. 3, IT1?"' Jechiliah. The Masora, however, orders is to be read in the latter place without the addtional and thus it is found in many Heb. MSS. and in the antient edition of the Hagiogr. printed at Naples, 1487. Three Heb. MSS. collated by Houbigant, and several MSS., and four printed editions collated by Kennicott, read in ii. Chron. xxvi. 3, iT1? Jecholiah; and this was the original reading of another MS. collated by the same person. Our authorized English version in ii. Kings xv. 2, reads Jecholiah, but in ii. Chron. xxvi. 3, Jecoliah, improperly omitting the aspiration of the second letter of the original. (bd) Amoz, father of Isaiah the prophet. See Note on Select: Single Names No. xcii. ...
