Its outside radiating surface is approximately 16:5 sq. ft. The pump to be tested has a steam cylinder of 8 in. diameter and a water cylinder of 5 in. diameter. The common piston-rod is lVt in. diameter. The tail rods on both steam and water ends are Tnff in. diameter. The stroke varies up to 10 in., but should be measured every five minutes. The thermal efficiency of the pump alone can be expressed in the usual way. The thermal efficiency of the heater cannot be found so easily as it is hard to determine the condition of the steam entering the heater. As there is no expansion in the pump, this may be slightly superheated on exhaust. The pressure and temperature of the exhaust should be taken. However, if this shows saturated steam, the quality of the exhaust may be approximated as 99% and the heater charged with the heat in the steam at this condition above the heat over 32 in the feed water entering the heater. The efficiency of pump and heater combined--Heat turned into work-I-heat absorbed by heater Total heat in steam entering pump--heat in feed water above 32 Measure the inlet and outlet temperatures of the water passing Ihrough the heater and its weight or volume. From these observations, the B. T. U. taken up by the heater can be calculated. Measure the outside surface of the heater and exhaust pipes and calculate the radiation per square foot from a heat balance. Run one 60 minute test with a discharge pressure on the pump of lb. per sq. in. Take indicator cards off both cylinders and all other observations every five minutes.
