In addition to the rubber production, the practice of agriculture has been undertaken within the past few years, especially as regards cotton, and the future prospects of this section are very bright. Great expanses of virgin soil covered with tropical vegetation and fine woods, with a climate favorable to agriculture, afford opportunity for a development whose possible extent is difficult to determine. IRRIGATION. The coast of Peru from 4 to 18 south latitude is a narrow belt of arid land with an average width of 40 kilometers (24.85 miles). This belt is bounded on one side by the Pacific Ocean and on the other by the lower spurs of the Cordillera of the Andes, and is traversed from east to west by a series of rivers of steep gradient, forming the sugar and cotton bearing valleys, which are veritable oases in the desert. The works of irrigation so far completed are confined to the most westerly Department of the Republic, the Department of Piura, which is crossed by two rivers. These rivers are the Piura and La Chira. The first of these is a river of intermittent flow, which runs only four or five months of the year; but, owing to the deep and fertile character of the soil that borders it, it has been possible to construct as many as 12 canals. These canals water 20,000 hectares (49,400 acres). It would, however, be possible to increase the cultivated area to 60,000 hectares (148,200 acres), as there is an excess of water in the river as well as lands of good quality susceptible of being brought under irrigation.
