Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: ...been plowed for about thirty years. The yield of hay was estimated at less than 500 pounds per acre. The herbage on adjacent unplowed land consisted of red top, five-finger Potentilla Canadensis), a little bunch-grass (Andropogan scoparius, Mx.), wood rush, Luzxda campestns D. C), moss, and common sorrel (Rumex acetosella L.) All of these plants are commonly found upon soils, which are benefited by carbonate of lime.. In the case of the purple-top turnips the yield was raised from 78 to 96 pounds as a result of liming; that of wheat was raised from 2.1 to 3.2 pounds; but that of Swedish turnips showed a loss rather than a gain, though this seemed to have been due partly to poor and hence irregular germination. On the farm of J. J. Stedman, near Wakefield, land was chosen which had been used for growing Indian corn, in 1905, with the aid of stable manure. The soil was apparently in good physical condition. The yield of purple-top turnip roots was raised, by liming, from 36 to 46.5 pounds; that of spring wheat, from 2.1 to 2.9 pounds; and that of Swedish turnips, from 0.0 to 37 pounds. The results with red table beets on many of the plats were very irregular, though the yield on the limed plat was more than six times as great as on the unlimed one. On the farm of George Howland, Jamestown, a well-drained piece of land was employed which had been used formerly as a passageway for carts and wagons from the highway to a pasture on the back side.of the farm. The land had been in redtop grass for about fifteen years. The crop of purple-top turnip roots was raised, by liming, from 18 to 27 pounds, a gain of 50 per cent.; and the yield of wheat was raised, by liming, from 2.6 to 3.5 pounds; a gain of 40 per cent. At Middletown the experiment was conducted upon land ...
