But it is not only as a vision of grace, or as a good Lady Bountiful among her dependents, that the Queen has endeared herself to the home-loving English people. It is well known that she was never so happy as when at home, amidst the modest comfort of Sandringham or the unassuming surroundings of Marlborough House. With these she lived for more than forty happy years, chequered as are the lives of all of us, small and great, by pathetic experiences of parting and loss. There her children were born; there she lost her infant son; thence, when they had grown to manhood and womanhood, the others went forth into the battle of life, which is a battlefield indeed for all, however high in rank and place. There she watched by the sick bed of her husband, who, after a long struggle with death, happily recovered, and by the dying son who left her in tbe prime of early manhood, the most blameless and loving of sons, the gentlest heir-apparent whom England has ever lost. For such a loss time only can bring relief; time and the sense that it is indeed well with him who left so soon the troubles of this perplexed world. But it may well be that even now the mother's heart feels a keen pang as she looks upon his resting-place at Windsor. These are the ties which endear to the N nation a family of whatever rank, and in the past they have been, amid the distractions of royal life, less common than now. Nor does her motherly kindness end with her children. Of late she has learnt with admirable readiness what Victor Hugo would have called I'art d'Hre grandmlre. ...
