Not illustrated. 1895 Excerpt: ...two parts being fixed and revolving together. The air is first admitted to the interior of the central fan, and from here is thrown by six blades curved slightly backwards, through the same number of openings in the cylinder connecting their tips, into the outer portion. These openings or port holes, whose areas are together equal to that of the inlet, so as to avoid all throttling of the air, are covered by the blades of the outer fan which also curve backwards, and pass very gradually into the periphery, as shown by the acompanying sketch. These outer blades in turn discharge the air into an expanding passage leading into a double Evasee Chimney. By these arrangements the velocity of the discharged air is greatly reduced before it meets with the outer atmosphere. The blades are attached by angle irons to side discs, which form part of, and revolve with the fan. This is a small fan and, driven by belting, is quick running. It is made in sizes varying from 5 feet to 15 feet in diameter. Usually fans of this type, up to 8 feet, are made with single inlets, and larger ones with double inlets. In all cases care is taken to provide long bearings to prevent their heating, by distributing the pressure without increasing the size of the shaft, which would add to the friction to a much.greater extent. One of these fans, 10 feet in diameter, and running at 210 revolutions per minute, has given 188,000 cubic feet of air, under a pressure of yi inches water-gauge, with a useful effect of 82 per cent. 57. (1894). Describe and compare the Guibal and Waddle fans. The Guibal Fan.--This is an enclosed fan. It has been a most successful one, being the first to yield a good ventilation with a fair efficiency. There are many of this type in use, and it may, moreover, be said ...
