But either thefe laws were not well obferved, or bad not the defired effect; for the miferies of the Englifh still continued to increafe; and about four years after this, the Danes having taken Canterbury, reduced it to ashes, butchered nine tenths of the inhabitants, and murdered the Archbishop, who would not, or could not, pay the prodigious ranfom which they demanded. The Danes stoned him to death at Greenwich on Sunday May it, ion; whence his body was conveyed and buried in St. Paul's London; ten years after he was taken up and brought to Canterbury, and re-interred with great folemnity in the cathedral. LIVING, A. D. 1013. He was bifhop of Wells, when called in land and ornaments, and repaired to fucceed Elphege, and was deeply in-the roof, which had been burnt by the volved in the calamities of thofe un-Danes. He died anno loao, and was happy times. However, he was a great buried in hit cathedral, benefactor to bil cathedral church, both AGLE AGELNOTH, A. D. 1020. He had been a monk in the monaftery of GUftonbury, and was of a noble extraction. Writers of the time give him the appellation of The Good, for his excellent natural difpofition. In his time, ignorance and fupeniition had arrived at a great height in the church of England. This prelate, when at Rome, A. D. 1021, purchafed from the Pope an arm of St. Auguslin, Bishop of Hippo, for 100 talents or 6000 pounds weight of filver, and one talent or 60 pounds weight of gold.
