Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: ...at each floor and is situated on the front of the hatch, right beneath the floor landing. This plate consists of a latch with a spring on the back of it, which permits it to be pushed back by the finger or cam on the bottom of car, when the wheel or lever is brought to centre. Therefore, this spring latch releases the keeper on the door iron, the same being fastened to the door, permitting the operator to open the door. The act of the operator pulling the door back permits the bell crank to drop, thereby bringing the bell crank and rack movement into operation. This consists of a slanted groove in the rack casting and a lug on the bell crank which fits into the groove. The act of moving the crank up and down causes the rack to move backward and forward. The bell crank dropping brings the rack forward towards the car, the teeth on rack meshing into a gear on the bottom of the car. This gear has only about one-half the number of teeth that a full circular gear has; the toothed part of gear is out toward the rack when the controller is on centre. When the car is running the blank part of the gear is out toward the floor plate, thereby not coming in contact with the rack. Cut No. 2. Cut No. 2 shows the car level with the floor, the operator having opened the door, permitting the rack to mesh in the gearing on bottom of the car. This gearing is geared to a counter shaft, which is worked by a fan gear, which is on the rack shaft and worked by the lever or wheel; the rock shaft continues to the back of the car and makes fast to the shifting cables which operates valve.
