Only two cities showed lower rates for 1905 than for previous years--Cincinnati, Ohiot73.7I, and Scranton. Pa. t33.6I. The highest death rate from cancer for any of the larger cities was that of San Francisco, Cal. t125I, and then in order, Boston, Mass. t105.6I; Providence, R. 1. t97.2I; Rochester, N. Y.!93.9I; and New Haven, Conn. t92.4I. The lowest rate was shown for St. Joseph, Mo. t27.7I, and the next lowest for Scranton. Pa. t33.6I. The possibility that sufferers from cancer may resort to a city from its adjacent territory for the purpose of operation, and deaths resuiting therefrom be charged to the death rate of the city, and also the peculiarities of various urban populations, especially with reference to age distribution, must be considered before the true incidence of mortality from this cause in the different cities can be determined. Sex and age distribution of deaths from cancer for the registration area is as follows: As usual the deaths of females largely exceed deaths of males from this cause. An increasing number of deaths is shown with advancing years until the population becomes too much diminished to maintain the numerical increase.
