Something Must Be Done. This subject must be seriously dealt with. The abominations that are in being, it appears, all around us must be denounced by an indignant public opinion far more general in its character than that which tardily succeeded more than a quarter of a century ago in passing the Act of 1876, which pacified the agitation for a time, but left so much to the honour of the vivisectors and so much to the discretion of the Home Secretary, that old horrors have been practically revived, and a new generation of medical students is being reared under the hideous moral influences engendered by a cultivated disregard for animal suffering. The testimony now given in "The Shambles of Science" as to what has been going on up to very recent date in the physiological lecture rooms of the London University is not gatherca by the writers at second hand. On their title page they describe themselves as ' Two Students of Physiology," and their preface explains how, in order to acquire actual personal knowledge of what was going on in the physiological laboratories of London, they subjected themselves to the torment of witnessing the cruelties there perpetrated. They became "partial students of the Loudon school of Medicine for Women." By the payment of the necessary fees, and in a regular way, they obtained permission to attend various courses of lectures on advanced physiology. They made no secret of their opinions.
