For each season, in every community, there are novices to be instructed and set right, and there are old offenders to be restrained and suppressed. The future of worth-while sports afield in Minnesota depends. not only on a sensible and comprehensive program of wild life conservation and careful observance of the game laws, but likewise on a spirit of co-operation among the sportsmen and between the sportsmen and farmers. Preservation of game is necessary, and preservation of hunting grounds also is necessary; which means not only the acquisition of public lands for that purpose, but the promotion of good will on the part of private owners as well. Minnesota's organized sportsmen are to be commended for their activities and influence in that direction, but it is well to acknowledge that conditions during the season just passed have emphasized the need for expansion in their ranks so that the influence of good sportsmanship may keep pace with developments and the cause o'f wild life conservation may not lose ground. WINTER FISHING CURTAILED In the interests of conserving game fish, the commissioner has granted petitions this fall to curtail winter fishing on numerous lakes where the supply of fish has been' seriously reduced by intensive fishing as the spawning season approaches. All winter fishing has been prohibited on certain lakes, and in other Instances the privilege is limited to the spearing of pickerel and rough fish from licensed fish houses.
