Not illustrated. 1912 Excerpt: ... carrier from having any interest in any common carrier by water with which it may compete," which bill reads as follows: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That it shall be unlawful for any railroad or other common carrier, subject to the act to regulate commerce, approved February fourth, eighteenhundred and eighty-seven, as amended, to own, lease, operate, control, or have any interest whatsoever, by stock ownership or otherwise, either directly, indirectly, through any_ holding company, or in any other manner, in any common carrier by water with which said railroad or other carrier aforesaid does or may compete for traffic; and in case of the violation of this act each day in which such violation continues shall be deemed a separate offense, and any railroad or other common carrier violating this act shall, on conviction thereof, forfeit to the United States the sum of five thousand dollars for each offense. I am not prepared at this late hour to fully discuss the conditions' as they exist in the Northwest, but these conditions arc well known to the chairman ot this committee. I do know, as the chairman of this committee well knows, that the matter of the control of package freighters on the Great Lakes is a matter of vital interest, not only to the Twin Cities and the State of Minnesota, but to the entire Northwest. I might even say that it is a vital interest to the entire territory west of the Illinois-Indiana State line, since it applies to eastbound grain and grain products and west-bound merchandise, the products of New England.
