It is proved in works on Statics that the moment of the resultant of any number of forces in a plane, about a point in that plane, is equal to the algebraic sum of the moments of the several forces about that point. If the moment be zero, then the forces have no tendency to produce rotation about the point, and this is due either to the resultant being zero, or to its passing through the point. 91. To represent graphically, the moment of a force AB about a point Q by means of the funicular polygon. Draw ab parallel to AB to represent it to any scale. Take any pole o, and join oa, ob. From any point P in the line of action of AB draw Fx and Py parallel to oa and ob respectively. These lines are the two sides of the funicular polygon which meet on the line of action of the force AB. Through the point Q draw Qxy Fig. 34. parallel to AB, and meeting the sides of the funicular polygon in x and y. From o draw on perpendicular to ab. Then the moment of AB about Q is equal to the product of on and xy. proof.--Draw PM perpendicular to xy.
