Wayne County Michigan has built upwards of fifty miles of concrete pavement this year, the state of New York is building about 200 miles of concrete pavement, and there are many other places which I might mention where concrete is fast coming into favor as a paving material. Now, as to the paving itself. Going back to the three principal characteristics of pavements, and taking up the last mentioned, first, that is, sanitary quality, there can be no argument on this point. Concrete floors and sidewalks have long been accepted as the almost perfect construction from this point of view. It is very easily cleaned because its surface is hard and continuous, very little can stick to it and all dirt shows up very plainly when on it. As regards the second point, acceptability, concrete is hardly excelled by any other form of pavement. It gives the least tractive resistance, and is entirely free from slipperyness under average conditions on average grades. It is less noisy than brick, and has an appearance as beautiful as asphalt. This again brings us back to the question of cost. The first cost under average conditions is lower than the first cost of any other pavement, even including water bound macadam. It is more easily repaired than any other kind of pavement, and the work can be done as cheaply. As regards durability, under certain kinds of traffic, I believe there is no question on this point, as I have before stated there are alleys paved with concrete in Sioux City, which are in much better condition than the brick paved alleys.
