Over the doors of the Collegio Romano were suspended stone shields, on which were engraved the sacred monogram of the Saviour and a small cross over the letters; as soon as General La Marmora's decision to close the Jesuit schools for public lectures was promulgated, scaffoldings were erected and masons set to work to efface with their chisels these emblems--which had been placed there by the original founders of the Institution--on the plea that they were the tokens of a Body which had ceased to exist. An accident to one of the workmen employed on this task has, of course, been looked upon as a proof of the divine wrath at a sacrilegious deed. But great impatience is now felt by the people at the delay in His Majesty's arrival, which they suppose will be followed by the immediate transfer of the capital and of the whole of the machinery of a Government to Rome, and, therefore, by a development of trade, which is at present quite stagnant, owing to the non-arrival of the numerous foreign families who usually at this time of year have already settled here for the winter season, and whose absence will affect many classes from the artists, hotel-keepers, and those who let apartments, down to the smaller tradesman--the last of whom cannot recover from the effects of a totally blank season. All these people are beginning to recognize in the Pope's presence the cause of the vacillation and difficulties of the Italian Government in acting decisively; and there are at present indications of an ill-feeling towards the Pontiff himself, which is still more strongly expressed against such of his advisers as are known to support him in a policy which is looked on as so detrimental to the general interest of the Roman citizens.
