There is one other question. How many of you who are laying sidewalks now put in a drainage filling under their sidewalk? There are at least three. In what way do you provide an outlet for that drainage? Is it in the city where you have sewers? Mr. Talbot: It depends. We have field tile. Mr, Bingham: What is your soil? Mr. Talbot: Practically clay. Mr Bingham: How many use no drainage whatever under their walks? Quite a number more are using no filling than are using it. I remember at one of the National Association meetings a few years ago that question was brought up and it seemed to be utter heresy, so considered on the part of the older concrete men, that any one should think for a moment of putting in a sidewalk without anywhere from 8 to 16 inches of cinder or gravel or some coarse drainage filling under their walk. I remember a gentleman from Boston was asked in regard to the city specifications there about laying walk, and I would not be positive, but it seems to me that the specifications at that time called for 16 inches, and at the same time a gentleman from North Dakota was putting his cement walk right on top of sod or a level place, whatever the character of the soil, and claiming that he had tried the drainage filling, and the soil he had up there, trying to prevent the heaving of the walk and getting out of alignment, and that troubled him a great deal less than that which had the drainage filling in.
