About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1852 Excerpt: ...the Australian colonies generally during the last few months has been much larger than during an equal period in any of the preceding three years, and as far as we can judge at present it is likely to continue so; but the reason for this is, that at the present moment there is comparatively but little desire among the English labouring classes to emigrate, and the efforts which we have made to procure a larger number of English emigrants have not been successful. Although this interferes with our operations, and is a natural subject of regret to the Australian capitalist, yet, regarded as a proof of the well-being of the labouring classes in England, it is of course a subject of congratulation. The relaxations, however, which we have recently introduced into our rules (of which a copy is enclosed), and the efforts which we are making to procure SOUTH emigrants from Scotland, will, we trust, enable us to keep the proportions from the several AUSTRALIA parts of the United Kingdom more balanced than they have latterly been. 5. We may, perhaps, before we close this report, be permitted to recal to Lord Grey's recollection, that only two years ago, that is, on the 3d December 1849, we were required to defend ourselves from the charge of sending too few Irish emigrants to Soutli Australia, in answer to a memorial presented to the Governor by the St. Patrick's Society. This fact, when contrasted with the present complaint, affords some illustration of the difficulty of so conducting the emigration as to satisfy all parties in the colony. We have, &c. Herman Merivale, Esq. T. W. C. Murdoch. &c. &c. Fred. Rogers. Sub-Enclosure to Enclosure in No. 7. Government Emigration Office, Park Street, Westminster. Regulations for the Selection of Emigrants, and Co...
