About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910 Excerpt: ...the consequent inability to identify the proper connections when they are required for connection to the commutator. The remedy is obvious. The most frequent causes of trouble are grounds in the armature. Many constructors fail to test the under coils after the overlying coils are put on, as mentioned in a former chapter. If there is only one ground in the armature and none in the field windings, the machine will work successfully, but should there be a ground in the field circuit also, no current can be generated. Another frequent cause of trouble is in the connecting of the field coils together. These the writer has seen, which were connected so that the coils were working in opposition to each other. When the field coils are properly connected one of the lower ends of the field magnet will be a north pole, and on the opposite side of the armature the end of the field magnet will be the south pole. In this case there is a flow of the magnetic lines of force through the armature from one pole to the other and the magnetic circuit is completed through the yoke at the top of the field. If, however, the end wires of the coils are wrongly connected together, the two lower ends of the field magnet will be of the same polarity, and the opposite pole will be the entire top of the machine. In this case there will be no flow of the magnetic lines of force through the armature and, in consequence, no current can be generated when the armature is revolved. The direction in which a current of electricity travels through a wire wrapped around an iron core is what determines the polarity of the ends of the core, therefore it will be readily apparent that if the two pieces of the field magnet of this dynamo were separated, and while one of the halves remained in its norm...
