Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...For very accurate results, allowance must be made for heterogeneous materials as, for example, for ordinary annealed sheet steel where the magnetic circuit consists of approximately 90% steel and 10% is scale, as these two materials have different magnetic properties. For general use sheet steel is considered as homogeneous, and a constant r or X used for the whole volume, in which ease the error is such that at high inductions the actual losses will be greater than the calculated losses. Calculating hysteresis losses involves a thorough knowledge of the materials and their previous history as many factors enter into the magnetic properties of materials. Hysteresis, besides depending primarily on the maximum induction, residual and coercive force, depends on the physical condition and chemical composition of the material which also involves heat treatments, etc. It-has been found that by introducing certain amounts of manganese, we obtain an iron alloy which is practically non-magnetic, whereas there are alloys of manganese, copper and aluminum which are highly magnetic although the three metals of the alloy are of themselves non-magnetic. Any alloy which hardens the steel, (as tungsten, etc.), raises the hysteresis loss. Sir Robert Hadfield found that the hysteresis loss in steel could be greatly reduced by the addition of silicon. In consequence, when low loss machines are required, silicon steel is used. The greater the amount of silicon the lower the loss appears to be, but the amount of silicon used for practical purposes is limited by the fact that as silicon is added the saturation density is decreased and also, as additions of silicon causes the material to become brittle, the difficulty of punching and other considerations has limited the amou...
