Students are freely encouraged and assisted in their research by lumbermen and operators of wood-using plants, and with this help they are able to make investigations of practical value. Frequent conferences with the instructor give an opportunity for reporting results and receiving further instruction; and later, at special sessions, the final report of each student is brought before the class for general discussion. The object of the Marketing course is to familiarize the students with methods of marketing merchandise and to give them training in the analysis of every-day marketing problems. The material for the course is largely included in Copeland's Marketing Problems. The first main division of the course discusses methods of marketing goods for retail distribution. The first topics under this division are conditions determining demand, the position that the consumer occupies in the shaping of marketing policies and the influence of consumers' buying habits and buying motives upon marketing methods. For example, consumers buy some articles where it is most convenient; for others, they shop. Style is one of the conditions affecting demand. The form in which the product is packed and presented is another influence which necessarily must be considered from the standpoint of the consumer.
