The hulls were partly hollowed out by the burning of charcoal of reiva-rewa; for this wood, though like rata it is difficult to ignite, retains its heated glow long after it is removed from the fire, unlike maire, which at once becomes cold and dead. A second, though smaller tree having been felled and roughly shaped in a similar manner, vines of aka were prepared by the slaves for the hauling of the hulls, the hiwi, to the sea-shore, w not far distant.
