Not illustrated. 1918 Excerpt: ...in this attempt to prove Mr. Jefferson's grasp of the important subject of daylight illumination. A few statements are found indicating the size and number of window panes, but the most complete statement discovered, in Mr. Jefferson's own handwriting on the back of a drawing for one of the "hotels" at the University, reads as follows: "In this drawing the room adjacent to the dormitory is very poorly lighted and aired, having other rooms on 3. sides, it could receive air and light on one side only, and that by a single window opening into the arcade, to remedy this, place a window over the point (a) between the top of the terras and the top of the external entablature in flank, intermitting the entablature at that place, make the window semicircular and return the entablature on itself on each side so as to embrace the window on each side, and all but in contact with it. instead of a full architrave let it shew a 2. I. ogee only on it's rim, to leave more space for light; & let the window sill range with the bottom of the entablature, and the top of the ogee with the top of the entablature; which being (say) 35. I. high, after deducting 5. I. for the sill and ogee, leaves 30. I. for the radius of the semicircular sash, this window should open on pivots placed horizontally (as the upper windows in the Monticello house) to be managed by a cord, or (being but 8. f.--8.1, from the floor) may be opened and shut by hand, mounting into a chair." This extract gives a clear idea of the minuteness with which Mr. Jefferson treated the detail in his designs, and can well be accepted as indicative of a similar care and circumspection in regard to the lighting and ventilating arrangements of all his struc tures.
