Montgomery Martin, History of the Colonies of the British Empire, London, 1843, p. 135, ) In 1840 the export of the whole of British Guyana had decreased to fully 3,350,000 -; in 1849 to 100,550 ffi (simnonds p. 67) and at present the cultivation of Coffee seems to be entirely abandoned, for not the least mention has been made of the exportation of Coffee, as regards Guyana, for a long time past in the Statistical tables relating to the colonial and other possessions of the United Kingdom. (Surinam.) b. Dutch Guyana. The latest researches teach us that the Coffee plant was introduced into Surinam between 1711 and 1713 during the governorship of Johan De Goyer (P. A. Leupe By drag en tot de taal-land-en volkenkunde van Nederl. Indie, nieuwe volgreeks VIII p. 228. (Contributions to the Philology, Geography and Ethnology oj Netherlands India, new series). The first Coffee obtained there was sent as a trial to Holland in September 1718, but regular shipments only appear in 1723, in which year 5928 Cfi were sent from Surinam to Amsterdam. Only in 1730 the Coffee production commenced to be of more importance, the exports being in 1730/31 433,000 ffi. 1731/32 630,000 - 1732/33 1,130,000 - 1733/34 1,099,000 - and thirty years later, about 1760, the export of Coffee from Surinam could be computed at an average of 15 million pounds a year. According to Ricard, Traite etc. I, 148, the imports of Coffee at Amsterdam from Surinam amounted in 1777 to 18.920.000 ft 1778 15.058.000 - 1779 9.948.000. and the culture held this position for several years; for, in 1787 the export was fully 12 mil.
