About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1853 Excerpt: ... possess a monocotyledonous structure, and an endogenous mode of growth; but we have next to call attention to a few of a more ambiguous character, belonging not entirely either to the one or to the other great division of the Vegetable Kingdom. The Yam, --Dioscorea alata, a tropical vegetable, which serves as a kind of substitute for Potatoes, where the temperature does not admit of this useful root, or even indeed of the Sweet-potatoe of the Southern States of North America, being cultivated to advantage, belongs to the family Dioscorece, distinguished by the reticulated structure of its leaves, and a peculiarity in its stem, for which I may refer to Dr. Lindley, Veg. King., p. 211, --and D. discolor, are both climbers with large underground tubers; but another very curious plant of the family of which we have a specimen is the Elephant's foot, Testudinaria elephantipes, so called from the fancied resemblance which it bears to that huge unshapely member. The form of the rhizoma is hemispherical, and its texture hard, and cracked in various directions, whilst a thin scandent stem, not unlike that of our common Black Bryony, Tamus communis, which belongs to the same family, shoots out from its centre. Another link between the endogenous and exogenous class of plants is afforded by the Cycas tribe, of which we possess a good example in the Cycas revoluta, the pith of which yields a species of Sago, though that of commerce is usually obtained from an allied species, the C. circinalis. The Cycadeae have the leaves of a Palm with the concentric rings of a Fir, whilst like the latter their mode of fruiting differs essentially from that of both the great divisions of plants, the seeds being naked, or destitute of any envelope, their sole protection being the bractea
