Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt: ...dome-shaped, single straw skep still reigns supreme, the season rarely passes without there being one or more stocks among the number that refuse to swarm, though crowded with Bees to overflowing. The only available course to pursue in such cases is to make an artificial swarm, which is done by driving. Left to themselves, the summer flits by, wasted in this unprofitable manner, and the owner is impatient to see the swarm issue forth; and still the Bees hang idly in a growing cluster around the entrance, doubtless pondering pro and con over the weighty question "Shall we swarm or no?" The method of driving is very simple. If a round-topped hive is to be operated upon, in commencing operations, blow a little smoke into the entrance and over the Bees outside, to quiet them, then lift it from the floor-board, and place it crown downwards in a bucket to keep it from rolling over; put an empty hive of the same size on top, and tie a bandage around the junction to prevent the Bees escaping and so becoming troublesome to the operator. This done, gently beat the lower hive with the open palm, taking care not to strike too hard, or it may break the combs from their attachment. After the lapse of, say, from ten minutes to a quarter of an hour for instance, see if sufficient Bees have ascended into the top hive to make a fair average swarm, and if so, set it down on the old stand, placing the old hive on another floor-board a few yards away. The new hive, standing on the site of the old, will receive a farther accession of Bees, inasmuch as all that are abroad in the fields will enter it on returning. Be careful to observe that enough Bees remain in the old hive before setting the driven swarm on the stand; if not, put a handful back with the gloved hand. Th...
