About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 Excerpt: ...8 400 12., 500 14 Messrs. Crossley have not renewed their fire-bars for 9 years, and they have only once partially relined their generators. Messrs. Spicer, of Godalming, have had a nearly similar experience. These instances are, however, more favourable than usual, and it will be best to make the allowances given above. Mr. H. Collinos Bishop (Leyton) wrote that he was of opinion that the figures obtained, so far as to fuel-costs, could be much improved as the load increased. He quite hoped to obtain at Leyton a consumption of 15 pounds of anthracite coal per unit generated and of 2-25 pounds per unit sold, and a nett cost for fuel per unit sold (including coal, coke, and gas for ignition-tubes) of 0-2ud. It will be noticed that Leicester obtained the low figure of 0-18d. per unit (he assumed that it was per unit generated), the coal per unit amounted to about 3 pounds, win h equals 10s. 6d. per ton as the price paid for anthracite. As no other stations remote from the mines are able to get coal delivered at such a price, comparison with this station is unfair, for he presumed that they did not charge carriage against fuel costs. Sufficient ashes are obtained from the generators to nearly heat the boiler, so that an average of 30 to 40 pounds of coke daily is all that is required for the latter. He objected to all costs being given at per unit generated, as from an engineer's point of view, the costs per unit sold was far more important. The first complete year's working of the Leyton station was just completed, and he was able to state the costs for the year, as follows: --Cost per Unit Sold. Pence. Fuel, including coal, coke, and coal-gas ignition-tubes... 0-3114 Oil, waste, water, an...
