In their earlier book in the Guides to Research Methods in Language and Linguistics series, Research Methods in Second Language Acquisition: A Practical Guide, leading researchers Alison Mackey and Susan Gass brought together an international team of experts to provide an overview on the leading research methods in the field of second language acquisition research. Building on the foundations of that earlier text, Mackey and Gass have again assembled a team of experts to cover the latest and most cutting-edge research methods that all students and early-career researchers will need to know in order to develop their own projects and experiments.
In eleven wholly new and six substantially revised chapters, contributors cover traditional methods of research and data collection in SLA including classroom research and formal theory-based research, as well as forward-looking and experimental methods which reconsider traditional elements of SLA research such as movements beyond WEIRD subject selection, problematic terminology in the community such as ‘native speaker’, and ways to promote work by minoritized scholars. These chapters cover qualitative and quantitative research methods, statistical analysis, methods for data replication, and methods for collection of data for different disciplinary focuses such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and pragmatics. With a focus on offering up-to-date coverage, this valuable book ensures students and early-career researchers will have a strong foundation in both traditional and cutting-edge techniques and methods. All chapters include suggested reading lists, additional resources, project ideas, or study questions to encourage students to apply their learning to their own research project design.
