About the Book

The most spine-tingling suspense stories from the colonial era--including Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, and H. P. Lovecraft, and many more This stunning anthology of classic colonial suspense fiction plunges deep into the native soil from which American horror literature first sprang. While European writers of the Gothic and bizarre evoked ruined castles and crumbling abbeys, their American counterparts looked back to the colonial era's stifling religion, and its dark and threatening woods. Today the best-known tale of colonial horror is Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, although Irving's story is probably best known today from various movie versions it has inspired. Colonial horror tales of other prominent American authors--Nathaniel Hawthorne and James Fenimore Cooper among them--are overshadowed by their bestsellers, and are difficult to find in modern libraries. Many other pioneers of American horror fiction are presented afresh in this breathtaking volume for today's public readers. Some will have heard the names of Increase and Cotton Mather in association with the Salem witch trials, but will not have sought out their contemporary accounts of what were viewed as supernatural events. By bringing these writers to the attention of the contemporary readers, this collection will help bring their names--and their work--back from the dead.

About the Author :
Henry James was born in 1843 in New York and died in London in 1916. In addition to many short stories, plays, books of criticism, autobiography and travel, he wrote some twenty novels, the first published being Roderick Hudson (1875). They include The Europeans, Washington Square, The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, The Princess Casamassima, The Tragic Muse, The Spoils of Poynton, The Awkward Age, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl. Washinton Irving (1783-1859), American essayist, novelist, and historian, was born in New York to a wealthy merchant. He studied law, but because of his delicate health, his family sent him on a tour of Europe, where he collected material later used in his stories and essays. The first American author to achieve international fame, his literary career served in many ways to consolidate the cultures of the United States and Europe. Graeme Davis began writing for tabletop role-playing games in the early 1980s, and among many other credits he helped develop Games Workshop's blockbuster Warhammer dark-fantasy franchise and the 90s gothic hit Vampire: The Masquerade, as well as more than forty electronic games. He lives in Lafayette, Colorado. J. Paul Boehmer, an American actor best known for appearances in the Star Trek universe, has narrated numerous audiobooks, winning nine AudioFile Earphones Awards and two Audie Awards. Justine Eyre is a classically trained actress whose audio narrations have won the prestigious Audie Award and several AudioFile Earphones Awards. Jim Meskimen is a stage, film, and television actor who has appeared in many well-known movies and television shows. He acted in Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon, both of which were nominated for Best Picture Oscars. He is the winner of an AudioFile Earphones Award and lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Tamra Meskimen. John Rubinstein, Tony Award-winning stage actor, has earned several AudioFile Earphones Awards and was a finalist for the 2013 Audie Award for best narration. Stefan Rudnicki is a Grammy-winning audiobook producer and a multiaward-winning narrator, named one of AudioFile's Golden Voices.

Review :
"A well-curated collection of creepy, spooky, and downright weird pieces by a core group of American authors...[An] excellent example of true American horror." -- "Booklist" "Rather than the gothic castles of Europe, these feature witch trials and dark and foreboding forests. The colonial period was truly the birthplace of American horror, as these stories point out." -- "News-Gazette (Illinois)" "This important anthology reveals how the religious beliefs, historical events, and folktales of the colonial period influenced the writerly imaginations that led to the evolution of the modern horror genre." -- "Library Journal (starred review)"
