About the Book

John Donne, Andrew Marvell, George Herbert, Thomas Carew, and Henry Vaughan--these were some of the seventeenth-century writers who devised a new form of poetry full of wit, intellect, and grace, which we now call metaphysical poetry. They wrote about their deepest religious feelings and their carnal pleasures in a way that was radically new and challenging to their readers. Their work was largely misunderstood or ignored for two centuries, until twentieth-century critics rediscovered it, finding in it a deep originality and a willingness to experiment that made much conventional poetry look merely decorative. This collection provides the perfect introduction to this diverse group of fascinating poets.

About the Author :
Nightfire is the new horror imprint from Tor. For more information visit www.tornightfire.com. John Donne (1572-1631) was an English poet, satirist, philosopher, and chaplain who is considered a founder of the Metaphysical Poets, a group of writers characterized by their ability to coax new perspective through paradoxical images, inventive syntax, and imagery from art, philosophy, and religion using an extended metaphor known as a conceit. Donne's works are notable for their realistic and sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires, and sermons. He is firmly established as one of the greatest poets in the English language, strongly influencing writers of the seventeenth century. He died in 1631 and was buried at St. Paul's Cathedral. Nicholas Boulton is an actor and narrator whose work has been awarded the prestigious Audio Award for best narration, as well as many AudioFile Earphones Awards. In 2023, he was named a Golden Voice by AudioFile magazine. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, winning the BBC Carleton Hobbs Award for Radio. He has since been featured in countless BBC radio dramas, narrated a plethora of award-winning audiobooks, and died a thousand deaths in various video games. Film, TV and theatre appearances include Shakespeare in Love, Game of Thrones and Wolf Hall. Roy McMillan is a director, writer, actor, and an Earphones Award-winning narrator. Among his audiobook readings are Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, A Dog's Heart by Mikhail Bulgakov, and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. Jonathan Keeble, winner of four AudioFile Earphones Awards, combines his audio work with a busy theater and television career. He has been featured in over six hundred radio plays for the BBC, appearing in everything from Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes to Doctor Who and The Archers, in which he played the evil Owen. As an Earphones Award-winning narrator, he is in high demand for his voice work. He has recorded over two hundred audiobooks.

Review :

"An excellent introduction to a period of English literary history...The 'seize the day' exhortation of Andrew Marvell's 'To His Coy Mistress' is one of the most famous poems in the language...The inclusion of the woman poet, Katherine Philips, is appreciated in a time when few women were taken seriously as writers...The readers, themselves, are excellent with appropriate British accents."
