About the Book

When Christian healthcare professionals engage in their practice, they serve people who are hurting, ill, and in positions of vulnerability--from newborn infants to people in their last days of life. As a group, Christian healthcare professionals serve on the frontlines of spiritual and temporal warfare where theology and praxis intersect.

In Scripture and Scrubs: A Christian Calling to Healthcare, social work professor Michael E. Sherr, dean of nursing Angelia M. Mickle, and theologian Jason K. Lee partner together to provide Christian healthcare professionals with tangible guidance and scriptural encouragement in their chosen vocation. Part One investigates the role of the healthcare professional as an agent of common grace and a frontline worker for the God of the Bible. Part Two then unpacks specific character traits of the Christian healthcare professional and ends with concrete tips for thriving amid the many challenges of healthcare service.

Useful as a textbook for students pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, social work, and allied health fields, each chapter provides real-life scenarios that can be used as case studies. Additionally, chapters include questions for further reflection or classroom discussion.

Grounded in both theological insights and the experiences of longtime healthcare professionals, Scripture and Scrubs provides a Christian vision of healthcare practice that will encourage weary professionals and inspire students preparing to enter their respective areas of service.

This book is for students embarking on their journey to experienced professionals seeking to reignite their passion. I am deeply blessed by this work and confident it will be a blessing to others."

"This book is a must read for all Christian healthcare professionals on the frontlines no matter the stage of their career. Through thoughtful integration of real-life scenarios and well-crafted questions for reflection, the authors align the truth of Scripture to help us grow as servants of common grace. Being on the frontlines as a Christian healthcare professional is challenging, but Sherr, Lee, and Mickle offer biblical encouragement for the weary and remind us that we are not alone in the journey. On every page, they point to the God who is our help and our hope as he guides us by his amazing grace and perfect provision to be servants of common grace."
--Kimberly Fenstermacher, RN, Assistant Dean of Nursing and Professor, Messiah University

"Healthcare is hard. Fortunately, we can trade our despair for hope as Christian healthcare workers. Scripture and Scrubs will encourage health professions students, novice healthcare workers, and seasoned professionals by reminding us not only about we serve but also who we serve."
--Judy Gregg, DNP, RN, Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, Mount Vernon

"There is often an expectation of those who minister on the frontlines of healthcare to be superhuman, possessing limitless knowledge and resilience. Scriptures and Scrubs provides inspiration and encouragement for those living their purpose as ministers of God's grace through their calling as dedicated healthcare professionals. I pray this work will be a special blessing to your spirit as it has been to mine."
--Peter John Ramsey, Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Research and Development, Haleon Healthcare

With relatable anecdotes, theological reflections, and practical applications, this book serves as a beacon of encouragement and guidance for Christian healthcare providers, emphasizing the importance of serving as ambassadors for Christ. With its thoughtful blend of scholarship and pastoral care, it's an indispensable resource for those seeking to embody God's grace in their healthcare practice."
--Matthew Stanford, Chief Executive Officer, Hope and Healing Center and Institute

"Scripture and Scrubs is essential reading for every Christian healthcare provider seeking to understand the 'how" and 'why' behind the difficult 'what' of their practice. Michael, Jason, and Angie provide realistic perspectives for working in healthcare while also offering vital encouragement. Reading Scripture and Scrubs has reinvigorated my love of nursing, and I know it will do the same for the next reader."
