About the Book

Scotland, 1892. Dugald Gunn never expected to inherit Lotherine Estate so soon, but his father's sudden death thrusts him into power-and into a web of dark family secrets. His mother, long thought dead, escapes from an asylum, returning with vengeance in her heart, while his brother Archie challenges his leadership. Beyond the estate walls, rebellion brews. Miners strike, the whisky trade faces destruction, and forbidden love defies tradition. The Featherstone Massacre ignites unrest, and as war looms, the Gunn family is tested like never before. James Gunn, Dugald's son, seeks freedom-and finds it in the arms of Hannah Farrell. But when war calls him away, the Quintinshill rail disaster shatters lives, and on the battlefields of World War I, fate delivers its final blow. Ostracised and alone, can Hannah survive the choices made by the men she loved? From the windswept Scottish Highlands to the horrors of war, Whispers of Change is a sweeping tale of power, love, and survival. Perfect for fans of historical family sagas, gothic romance, and epic tales of love and betrayal.

The Wishing Shelf Book Awards EDITORIAL REVIEW 30th May 2025 TITLE: Whispers of Change: Struggles of the Heart AUTHOR: Derek Farmer Star Rating: 5 'A smartly plotted, historical saga with a fine cast of memorable characters. A Wishing Shelf recommended book!' REVIEW It's wonderful to see that 'historical drama' is alive and kicking in the hands of Derek Farmer. And, let's face it, the genre is HUGELY popular with bestselling authors such as Ken Follett venturing into it. In fact, Pillars of the Earth is his most popular book! Being a fan myself, I happily settled down with this Scottish-set novel. And, I must say, I enjoyed it a lot. There's plenty of drama - and when I say plenty, there's PLENTY! - wonderfully rich characters to root for (and to despise) and, best of all, a richly layered and highly unpredictable plot. Set in the 1890s, this is very much the story of Dugald Gunn, a young landowner in Scotland, his son and the love of his life, Hannah. Set during the run up to World War 1, it's a story of dark family secrets, forbidden romance, and looming war. It's very much got a 'family saga' feel to it, the characters being the jam that holds everything together. In terms of writing style, it's strong, with even pacing and plenty of dialogue. In terms of who the novel is for - well, it' s got to be historical family drama fans. I'm thinking The Thorn Birds (loved that book) by Colleen McCullough or the Anna McIntyre Sagas by Christine MarionFraser. If that' s your 'thing', this book is for you. All in all, a smartly plotted, drama-filled gem! A 'Wishing Shelf' Book Review
