About the Book

First published in 1997, Qualitative Educational Research in Developing Countries offers a compelling collection of 11 original, in-depth accounts of qualitative research and evaluation in developing countries. The book argues that innovative qualitative methods provide significant advantages over traditional approaches. Drawing on examples from Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, Central America, and the Caribbean, each chapter delves into a specific method—such as qualitative interviews, fieldwork, or document analysis—while addressing both theoretical and practical considerations. Key issues explored include the identification of appropriate research questions, access; research ethics; practitioner research; case study evaluation; North-South collaboration and the potential of qualitative research for policymaking and theory.

With a newly written Introduction accompanying this reissue, the book remains an essential resource for scholars and students of education and education policy.
