About the Book

Qualitative meta-synthesis (QMS) represents a growing approach to reviewing qualitative literature, organizing findings, and developing theoretical approaches for new research. This edited collection showcases the method through diverse applications in criminology to understand deviance, crime, and victimization, addressing topics including Asian gangs in the United States, honour-based violence in Scandinavia, intimate partner violence neutralization, human trafficking in Southeast Asian scam compounds, barriers to criminal justice engagement for people with intellectual disabilities, police deviance, and sexual harassment in retail workplaces, among others. The chapters in this collection provide insights into their substantive areas as well as provide diverse illustrative examples of best practices when conducting a QMS.

This book will appeal to postgraduate students, academic researchers, qualitative methodologists, and criminal justice professionals seeking rigorous qualitative synthesis methods and diverse applications in criminology. About the Author :

Heith Copes is Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His research focuses on narrative sense making among those who engage in crime and deviance.

Andy Hochstetler is Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Iowa State University. Much of his work examines offender decision-making and outcomes by incorporating offenders’ self-appraisals, estimated prospects for conventional success, and environmental contexts into understanding and predicting recidivism and crime continuation He also has written on aspects of drug use and misuse and on re-entry from correctional sentence.
