About the Book

Subsurface Remediation: Vadose Zones and Aquifers presents the state-of-the-art physical treatment methods for remediating contaminated subsurface formations, bridging theoretical foundations with practical applications through pedagogically enriched content. This book guides readers through the complex mechanics of water flow and solute transport in porous media, offering groundbreaking insights into dispersivity estimation methods. It also includes detailed examinations of inward hydraulic gradient sufficiency evaluation, degradation rate constant estimation methods with mass balance considerations, soil venting mechanics, and pump-and-treat technologies. With over 45 worked examples, end-of-chapter problems, and dual unit systems (SI and Imperial), this resource equips environmental engineers, hydrogeologists, and students with the essential knowledge to effectively remediate contaminated groundwater systems either by removing pollutants or by converting them into harmless products. It addresses contamination from industrial spills, agricultural chemicals, urban runoff, and landfill leachates.

  • Provides in-depth coverage of widely used physical treatment methods including soil vapor extraction, bioventing, and pump-and-treat systems with real-world implementation guidance for environmental professionals.
  • Contains the most current research and methodologies for estimating longitudinal, transverse horizontal, and transverse vertical dispersivity values.
  • Includes end-of-chapter problems as well as a comprehensive solution manual for instructors.

About the Author :

Vedat Batu graduated from the Civil Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University (Istanbul, Türkiye) in 1969 with B.S. and M.S. degrees (combined) in the area of Civil Engineering. In the same year, he was appointed as an instructor in the Hydraulic Engineering Division of the Civil Engineering Department of Karadeniz Technical University (Trabzon, Türkiye). He received his Ph.D. in the area of Hydraulic Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in 1974. He prepared his Associate Professorship thesis in the Hydraulic Engineering area for a 1-year time period in 1976–1977 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. After submittal of his thesis and passing all required examinations, he was appointed as Associate Professor (Doçent) in the Department of Civil Engineering of Karadeniz Technical University in June 1979, and he worked as a faculty member until the end of 1982. Lastly, he was the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department. At the end of 1982, he voluntarily resigned from his position and went to the USA. He also served as a visiting professor in several universities in the USA and in the UK and then he joined the private sector in the USA and worked mostly on environmental engineering‑related projects. In Türkiye and the USA, he taught many courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels including hydraulic engineering, open channel hydraulics, hydrology, and groundwater hydraulics for over 10 years. His industrial work covers more than 30 years. Since he received his Ph.D. degree in 1974, Dr. Batu has been involved in many scientific projects and published a number of authored and coauthored papers in some internationally recognized journals including Ground Water, Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Soil Science Society of America Journal, and Water Resources Research. Dr. Batu has developed new concepts and approaches, including many analytical and numerical models in the areas of aquifer hydraulics, vadose zone hydrology, and solute transport in aquifers. Besides this book, he is the author of three volumes entitled Aquifer Hydraulics: A Comprehensive Guide to Hydrogeologic Data Analysis; Applied Flow and Solute Transport Modeling in Aquifers: Fundamental Principles and Analytical and Numerical Methods (Taylor & Francis CRC Press, 2006); and Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics: Illustrative Worked Examples of Surface and Subsurface Flows (Taylor & Francis CRC Press, 2024). The contents of these books, as well as the views of many practitioners and academicians, can be seen at www.amazon.com by searching for Dr. Batu’s full name. His original papers and books are cited and used by many scientists and practitioners around the world, and these can be seen at scholar.google.com by searching for his name. Apart from practitioners in various engineering areas, these books are being used as textbooks in various universities around the world, including North America, Europe, and the Far East. Dr. Batu was appointed as a full professor in August 2008 in the Department of Civil Engineering of Yeditepe University (Istanbul, Türkiye). Currently, he is with Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, Illinois, USA.
