About the Book

This essential reference for industry professionals, researchers, and advanced students provides a comprehensive and integrated overview of the technical and economic aspects of offshore renewable energy systems, focusing on offshore wind, wave energy, and energy storage technologies. Ertuğrul and Gao’s emphasis on the techno-economics of offshore wind, wave energy systems, and energy storage systems enables readers to understand them in all aspects, from their core technologies, such as offshore wind technologies, wave energy converters, energy storage, and electrical conversion, to their economic feasibility, such as lifecycle cost and energy market. Because multiple critical metrics are important for evaluating the cost-effectiveness and competitiveness of these systems, the authors analyse their benefits and challenges from both technical and economic perspectives, offering readers valuable insights into how these technologies can contribute to sustainable and cost-efficient energy solutions. The book is enriched with real-world wind and wave data, industry-aligned cost estimates, and case studies from global projects, bridging theoretical concepts with practical applications. The book presents an equilibrium among theoretical concepts, technical analysis, and economic assessment and offers a practical economic analysis of the discussed technologies. This integrated and holistic approach enables readers to gain comprehensive knowledge of ocean renewable energy and its technical aspects, challenges, and future trends. With this understanding, readers will be able to conduct techno-economic modelling to determine the feasibility of offshore 'energy farms' and make decisions based on existing real-world case studies. This book is an invaluable investment for industry practitioners and advanced students interested in ocean renewable energy and integrated generation technologies (with energy storage and transmission components). Policymakers and green technology financers will also benefit from the techno-economic analyses and high-level information contained within.

Table of Contents:
1. Offshore Wind Energy 2. Wave Energy 3. Energy Resources Assessment for Hybrid Development 4. Combined Offshore Wind and Wave Energy Conversion Systems 5. Power Intermittency of Combined Energy Conversion Systems 6. Integration of Energy Storage for Offshore Energy System 7. DC Transmissions and DC Grid in Offshore Renewable Energy Farms 8. Techno-economic Modelling of Offshore Energy Systems 9. Techno-economic Analysis of Offshore Wind Energy: A Case Study in Australia 10. Integrated Insights of Developing Offshore Energy

Review :
Gao and Ertugrul have produced a timely and authoritative work that fills a critical gap in the literature on offshore renewable energy. This book stands out for its rigorous yet accessible treatment of the technical and economic dimensions of offshore wind, wave energy, and energy storage systems. By combining in-depth technical insights with real-world data, cost analyses, and global case studies, the authors provide a holistic framework that is both academically sound and practically relevant. The book’s integrated focus on techno-economic evaluation makes it a valuable resource not only for engineers and researchers, but also for policymakers, financiers, and decision-makers in the renewable energy sector. It equips readers with the tools and understanding needed to assess the feasibility and sustainability of offshore energy solutions in a real-world context. This is an essential reference for anyone serious about contributing to the future of clean, ocean-based energy systems. I highly recommend it to professionals, researchers, and students alike. Michael Negnevitsky, Professor, Chair in Power Engineering and Computational Intelligence at University of Tasmania, AustraliaThis beautiful book by Gao and Ertugrul is very timely. Pushing the paradigm shift of designing and deploying hybrid energy farms that can make use of the common infrastructure built for wind to bring to maturity technologies that are less developed such as wave energy converters and offshore storage is what the community needs to hear right now, and is partly reflected in recent developments with offshore wind tenders where synergy is explicitly pursued, especially in Europe. Furthermore, the book itself is an absolute treasure trove of information presented in a systematic and comprehensive manner. As such, it will be very useful for teachers of ocean renewable energy technologies and new students entering the field. Antonis I. Vakis, Full Professor at University of Groningen, NetherlandI am delighted to endorse the book Techno-Economics of Offshore Renewable Energy: Wind, Wave, Energy Storage and Systems Integration by Dr. Qiang Gao and Dr. Nesimi Ertugrul. Most of existing books in this field typically focus on either the technical or economic side of offshore energy. Fortunately, this book arrives at a critical and timely moment in the emerging phase of offshore renewable energy development. By offering both deep technical analysis and thorough economic assessment — supported by detailed case studies — the authors ensure readers gain a systematic, integrated understanding of offshore wind, wave, and storage systems. This comprehensive approach is essential for driving forward innovation, improving deployment strategies, and shaping the future development of the field. This book will serve as an invaluable resource for engineers, researchers, and policymakers seeking to advance next-generation offshore renewable energy solutions.
