About the Book

If only there was one simple answer to all your teaching concerns. There is! This book argues that by focusing on building effective learning relationships with your pupils, everything else will fall into place. It can be the basis for positive behaviour management, stress reduction, student engagement and pupil progress. By identifying and then meeting the core set of needs we all possess in order to engage in any learning activity, you can improve teaching and learning and minimise challenge and stress. The text encourages you to reflect on your own practice throughout and plan for interventions and changes that will improve your teaching and the experiences of the learners in your care. This is not a theory book or an academic research tome; it is a straight talking, practical, thought provoking and insightful look into the challenges of being the best teacher you can be. Suitable for whatever stage you are at in your career, and whatever age group you teach, this book proposes a narrative that can work alongside the ever-increasing range of educational initiatives to which teachers are exposed.

Table of Contents:
1. Teaching challenges 2. The learning relationship 3. Meeting learning needs 4. The four learning needs 5. Planning to meet and manage learning needs 6. Mindful learning 7. The independent learner 8. The dangers of labelling learners 9. The learning map 10. Time management 11. John’s 12 rules 12. An introduction to learning intelligence

About the Author :
Kevin Hewitson has over 40 years of experience in teaching and has held pastoral and subject lead roles as well as having been an assistant principal responsible for teaching and learning strategies. His aim has always been to support teachers and engage both higher performing learners and those who find learning more of a challenge. He now works independently as an educational consultant and keynote speaker, sharing his vision with educational organisations, schools and teachers.

Review :
“Kevin's book isn't designed simply to be read and left on the shelf afterwards: he has crafted it into a reflective coaching conversation, helping the reader not only to absorb the concepts and ideas, but to bring them vibrantly alive in everyday classroom practice: through QR links to additional materials on the web, he hopes to build a community of practice to move the ideas forward over time.” Marius FrankDirector of E-Learning and Material Development - Achievement for All “Hewitson has distilled a vast range of literature on pupil engagement and his own teaching and management experience into a highly practical handbook for all professionals and senior students….Relationships are at the heart of good teaching and learning. In a knowledge-based economy we all need to be active engaged learners. Hewitson shows us how to do that and to support our colleagues and students. I would love to see every school and workplace creating total quality management circles…using this book as their guide.” Charlotte Davies NPQH, FRSATomatis Consultant
