About the Book

Plankton populations have lived in the oceans for hundreds of millions of years, performing essential functions within marine ecosystems. This book explores emerging and current topics in marine ecosystem plankton research, focusing on pelagic diversity, functioning, and productivity from a multidisciplinary structural and functional view. It also examines the context of environmental stressors and global Climate Change Research and Policy. The book represents a contribution from a team of researchers from several regions of the world with a common mission to enhance readers' understanding of current ocean science and marine biology while pointing towards future directions.

Table of Contents:
Preface. 1 PLANKTON PRESSURES IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE MARINE STRATEGY. 1.1 Global Ocean Science Infrastructures, Technological Development and Plankton Research. 1.2 Current and Forthcoming Threats to Coastal Zooplankton: Patterns Facing Increasing Freshwater Needs. 1.3 Climate Change Challenges on Coastal Environments: Physical Processes in Upwelling and Estuarine Systems. 2 INTEGRATED APPROACHES AND TOOLS FOR PLANKTON RESEARCH. 2.1 Zooplankton Dynamics at the Northern Boundary of the Canary Current Upwelling System (NW Iberian Peninsula). Prospects From Updated Time Series in the ‘Ría de Vigo’ and Adjacent Shelf. 2.2 Ecological Application of Biomarkers to Mesozooplankton Communities in the Mediterranean Sea. 2.3 Metagenomic-Based Analysis Providing a Complementary Data Method for Plankton Ecological Studies. 3 A WORLDWIDE PERSPECTIVE ON ZOOPLANKTON BIODIVERSITY. 3.1 Zooplankton From the Portuguese Coast and Northern Estuaries (Western Iberian Peninsula). 3.2 An Overview of Zooplankton Biodiversity in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean During the Last Two Decades With an Emphasis on Brazilian Estuaries, Coastal and Oceanic Regions. 3.3 Marine Plankton of Mozambique: The Rich (In)Visible World Supporting Biodiversity Hotspots. 3.4 Temporal Changes in Zooplankton Abundance and Assemblages in Japanese Coastal and Offshore Waters. 3.5 Zooplankton Species Diversity, Distribution and Long-Term Change of the Community Along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast – A Brief Review. 3.6 A Review of Planktonic Studies in Africa’s Contribution to Maintenance of Marine Biodiversity, Sustainable Consumption and Biological Production. Index.
