About the Book

This book is a comprehensive evidence-based guide for clinicians and trainees on the assessment and treatment of youth with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). OCRDs typically begin in childhood or adolescence and can be highly prevalent and impairing, though there has been minimal clinical guidance on treatment of such disorders in youth. This go-to handbook on OCRDs in childhood has an international range of expert contributors providing evidence-based guidance on assessment and treatments of these conditions including adapting treatment for very young children, digital mental health interventions, and family-based, parent-based, and intensive treatment formats. Chapters also review other field areas such as clinical presentation, causal and maintaining factors, and features and transdiagnostic psychological dimensions of ORCDs. The concluding chapters discuss future directions for the field and emphasize the need for diversity, dissemination, and implementation in childhood OCRD research. This book is essential for clinicians specializing in OCD and related disorders in children and adolescents. It is also applicable to clinicians, trainees, and students across a wide range of mental health disciplines.

Review :
'Storch and Guzick, themselves authorities in the assessment and treatment of OCD and related disorders in children and adolescents, coordinated a set of perceptive chapters/reviews that are fully referenced and with applied relevance. The worldly collection provides updated and useful information on the range of empirically supported treatments (CBT, medication), various treatment modalities (youth, family, parent), and pressing issues (diversity; dissemination). OCD is not a singular problem, and this scholarly and practical book exemplifies the several mental health disorders that are relevant to OCD. Readers will benefit from the recent treatment innovations, suggestions for developmental adjustments, and future directions.' Philip C. Kendall, University Professor, Temple University 'Expertly edited by leaders in the field, this comprehensive text is an indispensable resource for anyone in the field of pediatric OCD. It skillfully combines the latest research, treatment innovations, and clinical insights. With a focus on both well-established and emerging approaches, including digital and parent-led interventions, it addresses critical issues like treatment access and diversity in OCRD research. Essential for professionals, it's a must-have for advancing knowledge and improving outcomes.' Jonathan S. Abramowitz, Professor and Director of Clinical Training, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 'Drs. Storch and Guzick have compiled the most up to date information on the assessment and treatment of OCRDs in youth and topped it off with recommendations of where we as a field are still lacking and need to improve. As such, this book should serve as an indispensable guide for both clinicians looking to treat and clinical researchers looking to better understand the OCRDs.' Caleb W. Lack, Professor, University of Central Oklahoma 'Storch and Guzick have assembled an impressive collection of experts on the topic of childhood obsessive compulsive and related disorders. The chapters are thoughtful and comprehensive and written with both researchers and clinicians in mind. The volume is a much-needed contribution to the field. Add it to your bookshelves. You’ll refer to it often and each time you’ll discover answers to some of the most complex and intriguing questions on this important topic.' Michael A. Tompkins, co-director, San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, University of California at Berkeley 'Clinicians devoted to helping youth with OCD and related disorders rightly pride themselves on using “evidence-based” treatments. Paradoxically, non-researchers like myself spend so much time face-to-face with our patients and their families providing psychotherapy (or supervising new clinicians) that we rarely have time to dive deeply into the evolving evidentiary studies. Should I keep using this rating scale or is there a more effective one? Is the CBT/ERP approach I’m using tried and true or are there adjustments to be made that improve outcomes? Introduction to Assessment and Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders is a reliable resource for establishing the fundamentals and keeping us up to date.' Jon Hershfield, LCMFT, director of the Center for OCD and Anxiety at Sheppard Pratt 'An exceptional and comprehensive guide to the most recent advances in assessment and treatment in the complex arena of childhood OCD and related disorders. Skilfully compiled by top experts in OCD, it brings timely clarity to a rapidly-evolving field, and provides empirically-driven guidance for practice. A valuable, must-read resource that will be frequently-referenced by treatment providers.' Aureen P. Wagner,The Anxiety Wellness Center, Cary, NC, author of What to Do When Your Child has OCD and Up and Down the Worry Hill. 'This book has everything you need to build a state-of-the-art OCD spectrum disorder program! Truly comprehensive in scope, the volume is a collection of expert-authored chapters spanning the pediatric OCD landscape, including crucial but often overlooked aspects of care. Each topic achieves both breadth and depth, including supporting studies, case examples and concrete developmentally tailored skills. Providers trained to treat youth with OCRDs are critically needed. Whether new to specialized behavioral approaches or honing your skills and keeping up with the evidence base, you can’t find a more complete guide to treating OCD and related disorders.' Erika Nurmi, Associate Professor, University of California, Los Angeles
