About the Book

From the 1960s through to 1998, Northern Ireland was engulfed in a violent conflict known as The Troubles, a bitter struggle between Loyalists and Nationalists. This period was marked by bombings, murders and widespread civil unrest.

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement, a fragile framework for peace, power-sharing and cross-border cooperation did not force unification but allowed for the possibility of a referendumon on Irish unity if the majority in Northern Ireland ever supported it.

Two months after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, the debate over unification had re-emerged. Enonomic and political shifts have reignited speculation about the island's future. Behind the scenes, covert influence operations are already underway to sway public opinion toward unification. Intelligence sources suggest that secret negotations and manipulations are taking place to destabilise the unionist vote.

Security Services have descovered that a dangerous axis made up of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea are buying up infrastructure in the South of Ireland and are concerned following Unification they will either use Ireland as a back door into Europe of cause chaos that could once again place British Soldiers back on the streets of Ulster.

In response, a covert group within the security services, known only as the Shadow Protocol, has resolved to act outside the chain of command. Their mission, to bring down the government and prevent unification at any cost.

About the Author :
William was born in the countryside outside Downpatrick, a small town in Northern Ireland. His family had limited means, but that upbringing became a driving force behind his determination to build a better life and provide opportnities for his own children. Losing his mother at the age of twelve was a profound setback, but with support and resilience he returned to his studies, and after college, began his career in administration at Harland and Wolff, the Belfast shipyard.

His next role took him back to Downpatrick as a sub-accountant for a local manufacturing company. Still seeking a career that aligned with his ambitions, William joined the Northern Ireland Prison Service, just two days after his twenty second birthday. Over 27 years, he rose to the rank of Governor, serving through some of the most turbulent and dangerous periods in Northern Ireland's history. He was forced to relocate his family three times, due to imminent death threats on his life. Ultimately, neither his health nor his marriage survived the unrelenting pressures of those years, and in 2004 he was medically retired with PTSD.

True to character, William rebuilt his life. Once able to manage his illness, he returned to work in the charity sector, supporting vulnerable children and adults detained in police custody. He is the father of three adult children and the proud grandfather of six.

Writing became a vital outlet; both therapeutic and purposeful. His first book, his autobiography, 'Governor Inside the Maze,' was published by Gill and Macmillan and focused on the murder of a loyalist godfather inside the walls of the Maze Prison on a day when William was the Governor in charge.

His second book, 'Collusion Inside the Maze,' revisited the same event through a fictional lens, exploring the possibility that the victim had become an obstacle to peace and that elements of the Security Services played a central role in his murder. The novel introduces the character James Madison, launching a continuing series.

His latest novel, 'Operation Unification,' continues Madision' story, while his fourth book, 'Personal Reckoning,' is already underway with publication expected in June 2026.

Writing has allowed William to achieve his ambition that guided him from childhood; to provide a secure and fulfilling life for his family. He writes about subjects he knows intimately: the complexities of security, political undercurrents, and real-world tensions that shape Northern Ireland. Whether exploring alleged collusion or imagining the path towards Irish unification, William crafts stories rooted in lived experience and public interest.

He now lives in a beautiful apartment ten miles outside Belfast. Though he enjoys company and is naturally a social person, he has come to appreciate the balance and independence of living alone. Grateful for his family, health, close friends and stability, William remains deeply appreciative of his readers' support. He looks forward to meeting them at his forthcoming book launch at the Linenhall Library in Belfast.
