About the Book

Based on real events. On 1st January 1858, The Lunacy Act came into operation in Scotland. Lunacy Commissioners were responsible for the inspection of the conditions for every lunatic in Scotland. "Their visits are by no means confined to asylum... they have to hunt the misery of insanity in its humblest retreats, in the wretched wynds of old burghs, in the shanties of the inhospitable mountain side, or the hovels of the bleak and desolate islands of the western coast." Extract from 3rd Report, Lunacy Commission 1861. For one Commissioner, the hunt for lunacy became a struggle for his sanity. This is his story.
