About the Book

In this comprehensive and informative book, Christine Driver provides a systematic overview of the key issues that a supervisor of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy needs to consider and understand in order to work effectively and dynamically. Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Supervision: A Contemporary Introduction examines key elements of the supervisory role, from container, contract, frames and boundaries to the dynamics of supervisory relationship, unconscious processes, including the reflection process and parallel process, evaluation and assessment and ethics. Driver considers the importance of learning and exploration for both supervisor and supervisee, and provides guidance on how to effectively conduct these sessions. She provides clinical examples of in person and online supervision and considers learning theory, neuroscience and systemic ideas to support the reader on their own journey. The systematic approach to the key dynamics are outlined to enable readers to generate understanding about the patient and their internal world, as well as the development of the work of the supervisee with their patients. Part of the Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis series, this book is a rich resource for all analysts, counsellors and therapists who work psychodynamically or psychoanalytically as supervisors or who are conducting supervision training.

Review :
‘With this book, Christine Driver has written an expert's guide to the field of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic supervision, which is both well-suited to the needs of supervisors in training and also of relevance to experienced supervisors who want to review their thinking and practice as supervisors. Each chapter reviews significant contributions from the literature of supervision as it explores its theme and provides an overview of the theory of supervision that is always linked to the practice of supervision. The writing combines accessibility with depth and is informed by the author's long experience as a clinician, a supervisor, and a trainer of supervisors. The book provides a rich resource for all who are interested in the practice of supervision and in developing their work as supervisors.’ Stephen Crawford, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Fellow of the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling (FPC). Formerly Senior Programme Manager at WPF Therapy in London. ‘This is a well-researched and thoughtful book from an author whose writing is informed by her decades of experience in the clinical context of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and Jungian analysis. Students will find here a compendium of all that is essential for anyone taking up the role of supervisor for the first time; experienced supervisors will find, in its theme of the complexity of supervision, a helpful reference manual that touches on the most significant aspects of the subject. I can recommend it as both a teaching tool and as a useful aid for ongoing professional development.’ Susanna Wright, Jungian Training and Supervising Analyst. Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP).
