About the Book

Earthquake Engineering and Structural Control: Theory and Applications examines the basics of structural dynamics with its application for earthquake engineering and structural control methods. The objective is not to explain earthquake-resistant design but rather to present different methods of analysis under earthquake and other environmental loads such as fire and physical impact. While presenting fundamental concepts in a simple manner, this book presents structural systems and offshore structures leading to form-dominant design. The response spectrum method and nonlinear time history analysis of structures under earthquake loads are discussed in detail, while the basics of earthquake-resistant design through planning guidelines, as well as introductory seismology, are also covered. Presents dynamic analysis and illustrations of single-degree-of-freedom systems with numerous examples to explain the response spectrum analysis under earthquake and impact loads. Offers detailed solutions to multi-degree-of-freedom systems through numerical methods, supported by MATLAB® examples. Explains the proper application of seismic controls for different classes of structures, including offshore.

Table of Contents:
Structural Forms and Materials. Environmental Loads. Structural Dynamics. Experimental Structural Dynamics. Basics of Seismology. Structural Control.

About the Author :
Srinivasan Chandrasekaran is currently a Professor with Higher Academic Garde in the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and a Visiting Professor, Dept of Structural Engineering, University of Naples Federico II, Italy. He holds the prestigious Fellowship conferred by Ministry of Italian University Research (MiUR Fellow). He commands a rich experience in teaching, research, and industrial consultancy of about 29 years. He has supervised many sponsored research projects and offshore consultancy assignments, both in India and abroad. His active research areas include dynamic analysis and design of offshore structures, Structural health monitoring of ocean structures, Risk and Reliability, Fire resistant design of structures, use of Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) in marine risers, and Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) management in process industries. He was a visiting fellow under the Ministry of Italian University Research (MiUR) invitation to the University of Naples Federico II for two years. During his stay in Italy, he researched the advanced nonlinear analysis of buildings under earthquake loads and other impact loads with experimental validation on full-scaled models. He has authored about 170 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals and refereed conferences organized by professional societies worldwide. He has authored twenty-two textbooks, which various publishers of international repute publish. He is an active member of several professional bodies and societies, both in India and abroad. He has also conducted about thirty distance-education programs on various engineering subjects for the National Program on Technology-Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), Govt. of India. He is a vibrant speaker and delivered many keynote addresses at international conferences, workshops, and seminars organized in India and abroad. He holds life membership of many National and International professional societies. Giorgio Serino is a full Professor of Structural Engineering and Design (Univ. Naples Federico II: since 11/01), involved in teaching and Research activities. He is also an Elected Member of CUN (Italian National University Council, the consulting organization of the Italian Ministry of Education and Research) for the Civil Engineering and Architecture sector (1998 to 2007). Since 2007, he has been nominated as International Relations delegate of the School of Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II to the LLP-Erasmus Program. He is a registered professional engineer in Italy (9703, Albo Ingegneri Napoli) and Engineer in Training in California (XE075052, Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors). Serino has been conferred with many National and International prizes and awards. A few of them are, namely i) Finalist, Philips Morris Prize for Scientific and Technological Research, Italy, 1997; ii) 1-year post-doc scholarship, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, 1991; iii) 1-year scholarship, Institute for Applied Mathematics, CNR, Naples, Italy, 1990; iv) Winner of a 1-year grant, Research Ideas Competition, ISMES, Bergamo, Italy, 1990; v) Fulbright complete travel and study fellowship, Italy/USA, 1987-88; and vi) IBM Summer Stage Prize, Novedrate, Italy, 1984. He maintained a balance between academic and practical experience in the domain of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, and structural testing and innovative control systems. In the past 15 years, he has obtained experience in passive and semi active structural control systems as the principal investigator of projects sponsored by Italian and European agencies and the private sector. He is an active member in the technical committees of GLIS (Italian Working Group for Seismic Isolation) and ANIDIS (Italian Association of Earthquake Engineering). He is the Research Coordinator of MiSE-ICE-CRUI international project on structural anti-seismic bearings made of recycled rubber (2010-11), project RELUIS Line 7 financed by DPC (Italian Department of Civil Protection) on earthquake protection of buildings and bridges with passive/semi-active devices (2005-08), project AFERIA financed by MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Research) on anti-vibration railways tracks made of recycled rubber (2003-07), Team Leader in the experimental research project SPACE financed by EU on semi-active control with magnetorheological devices within the 5th Framework Program (2000 to 2003), Principal Investigator in 3 national research contracts financed by MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Research) on wind and earthquake control of structures (1999 to 2003), Team Leader in an experimental research financed by EU on semi-active control (1997- 98), Principal Investigator in 3 research contracts between ENEL and Univ. of Naples on seismic protection of HV equipment (1994-99), Principal Investigator in 2 research contracts between ISMES and Univ. of Naples on passive control of structures (1992-96). He is an active of many Italian and International professional societies. He has published more than 100 journal papers in refereed journals and conf. proceedings of International Societies. Dr. Mariacristina Spizzuoco is a Technical Executive, Dept. of Structures for Engineering and Architecture, University of Napoli Federico II, Napoli. Her experience in research and teaching has been acquired in about 20 years. She significantly contributed to the research projects including Passive and Semi-active Control of Structures under Earthquakes and Vibrations, Structural Health Monitoring of Civil Structures. A novel use of Recycled Rubber for Elastomeric Mats applied to reduce Railway Traffic Induced Vibrations, Development of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators using Recycled Rubber, Static and Dynamic Experimental Tests on Isolation Systems and Control Devices for Civil Constructions and Industrial Equipment are a few classical applications that she completed successfully. In the last few years, she has authored about 50 research papers in peer-reviewed international journals and refereed conferences. She is an active member of a few professional societies and committees of the European Union.
