About the Book

This book covers the microsystem integration aspects of biosensors. It provides an in-depth examination of how biosensors function within complete diagnostic systems and delivers a thorough foundation in both the biological and engineering principles essential for developing functional biosensor platforms.

Fundamentals of Biosensor Microsystems, begins with the introduction of biomolecules as bioreceptors and their possible target detection. It follows by elaborating on the techniques of biomolecules extraction; surface modification and treatment; immobilization and functionalization of biosensors. A wide range of biosensors are detailed in this book with deep fundamental explanations. It also explains the fundamentals of biosensors targets, receptors, target manipulations, biosensor detections, and data analyses. The authors also examine various types of sensors including, electrochemical biosensors, electrode-based biosensors, chemical biosensor, optical biosensors, mass-sensitive based biosensors, micromechanical-based biosensors, microfluidic and dielectrophoresis (DEP) biosensors, magnetic-based biosensors, and thermal biosensors. The authors also connect the reader with the applicable emerging technologies related to biosensor microsystems such as, point-of-care (POC) via lab-on-chip (LOC), biosensors, and internet-of-things (IoT).

The book is intended for senior undergraduates, postgraduate students, researchers, engineers, industry professionals and medical practitioners who are involved in the field of biosensors and microsystems development.

About the Author :

Azrul Azlan Hamzah is a Professor of Micro-Nanoelectromechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS) and the former Director of Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He received his BSc. from the University of California at Berkeley, USA in manufacturing engineering in 2000 and PhD from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in microelectromechanical systems in 2008. His research interests are graphene synthesis and technology, bioMEMS, artificial kidney, biomedical devices, Lab-on-Chip, micro/nano energy, MEMS technology and MEMS packaging.

Sharipah Nadzirah is a Lecturer at the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She is also a researcher specializing in nanoelectronic engineering and biosensors, focusing on designing and developing electrical biosensor microsystems for clinical and environmental applications. Her expertise lies in interdigitated electrode and field-effect transistor (FET) biosensors, developed through semiconductor fabrication processes, including thin-film deposition and lithography. With over 60 high-impact journal publications and a patented FET biosensor, her work bridges semiconductor process engineering and functional biosensor systems for clinical and analytical applications.

Subash C.B. Gopinath is a Professor in the Chemical Engineering and Technology Department of the Universiti Malaysia Perlis. He also serves as Chief Scientific Consultant at Future Science (China), Beijing Zhongke Jiaowen International (China) and Aromaticroot Queen Farmer Product LLP., (India). He also holds the title of Visiting Professor at Prince Songkla University, Thailand; Daffodil International University, Bangladesh; and Universiti Sains Malaysia. He was recently appointed as a Friendship Ambassador for the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base in China. Dr. Gopinath’s main expertise include biosensors, aptamer technology, and diagnosis of infectious diseases.
